“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
Madison Square Gardens on David Bowie’s 50th birthday
David Bowie was a leading figure in the music industry and is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
There have been very few like David Bowie, who came onto the music scene with a bang. He challenged our norms with gender-bending theatrics and pushed the boundaries with art. The elusive Bowie kept his liver cancer diagnosis quiet, so it came as a shock when we lost one of the most treasured iconic artists in 2016.
Do you love Bowie as much as we do? Here are some of our favourite facts about David Bowie for you to enjoy:
- David Bowie’s actual name was David Robert Jones. To avoid confusion with Davy Jones, the lead singer of The Monkees, he changed his name to David Bowie
- While people often claim that Bowie had two different coloured eyes, that is incorrect. Both of his eyes are blue, his permanently dilated pupil was the result of a fight where a fingernail sliced into Bowie’s eye – Sounds painful right?
- When he was just 17 years old, Bowie formed The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men, protesting against the treatment men with long hair faced on the streets of London
- In 1996, Bowie was one of the first artists to release his single Telling Lies available as a download
