“Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?”

Frida Kahlo 1953

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist known for her self-portraits and works inspired by nature and artifacts of Mexico.

Frida Kahlo was not only an iconic artist of the 20th century, she led a fascinating life too. Her unique fashion taste, iconic unibrow and marriage to Diego Rivera all added to the mystery and intrigue of this iconic woman. Even if you don’t know much about her, she is easily recognised as a popular emblem. Frida Kahlo posthumously skyrocketed to fame becoming renowned for her self portraits, which are imbued with symbolism inspired by her life story.

Do you love Frida Kahlo as much as we do? Here are some of our favourite facts about her for you to enjoy:

  • Frida often felt insecure, to combat this she created alter egos in her everyday life and paintings with her lavish traditional Mexican dress, meticulously crafted hairstyles and makeup
  • Around 55 of her 143 paintings were self-portraits showcasing her Mexican pride to symbolic portrayals with animals
  • Frida survived Polio when she was 6 and a horrific bus accident when she was 18, that sent a handrail through her back and out of her pelvis
  • Frida is an iconic figure for the LGBTQQIP2SAA community due to her openly expressive sexuality and her exploration of gender-bending fashion
